advocating for ethical science
Why It Matters
in short
-
Mauritius is advancing plans to become the Science & Research Hub of Africa and has in connection made announcements to change the Animal Welfare Act to support these plans in regards to animal experimentation
-
This in total contrast to international developments in the field - as policy makers are taking fast steps to phase out animal experimentation, making
way for scientifically and ethically superior Non Animal Models (NAMs)
-
Mauritius population has the right to know the full facts to form an independent opinion.
-
Next-gen, ethical, and sustainable technologies — that’s where the real growth and long-term employment opportunities lie.
-

Purpose
Progress Science Mauritius - Ethical Science Advocacy
Because Non-Animal / New Approach Methods (NAMs) are more ethical both in respect to HUMANS and ANIMALS!
Traditional animal testing often subjects living beings to invasive and terminal experiments, only to fail humans too—since more than 90% of drugs that succeed in animals do not work in people. This is neither ethical for animals nor for humans desperately waiting for treatment and cures.
We are dedicated to raising awareness on the scientifically superior ethical alternative research methods to animal experimentation.
Our work aims to
-
inform the public and policymakers to foster a society committed to ethical progress in science by focussing on educating the public about the true facts and history of animal experimentation and the importance of scientific advancement without animal methods
-
and to liaise with international organisations committed to ethical science and research
Since 1985 Mauritius extensively captures, breeds and exports long-tailed macaques for international biomedical research. This small industry with big foreign currency profits has in the recent years come under national and international scrutiny, not only due to ethical concerns, but also for questions of compliance of rules and regulations, biosafety and human health and environmental impact.
In March 3013 our citizens’ initiative 'Progress Science Mauritius / No Animal Experiments’ and campaign had been launched after our government in 2012 had announced their first plans of introducing a pre-clinical research bill in Mauritius to allow animal / primate experiments on the island.
With Mauritius's latest push to promote Mauritius as a new hub for biomedical research & development and after the Ministry announcing their plans to amend the animal welfare act regarding animal experimentation, we feel it is of utmost importance to share our vision, inform and seek collaboration with the concerning Ministries.
With some courage to free ourselves from old paradigms and the willingness to take a leap for a better future, we believe that Mauritius could have everything it takes to become a leader in sustainable development and ethical science.
